2012 Summer Arts Camps -- Faculty Bios

Jamie Anderson JAMIE ANDERSON-ROUMAYAH was a Detroit native until she moved to West Virginia ten years ago. She has been the Director of Charleston Stage Company’s Summer Arts Camp for five years. She is also Owner and Director of Danse Élan, a professional dance education company conducting “Dance Attack!” workshops nationally. Prior to that, she was a dance studio Owner and Director in Michigan. In addition to directing SAC, Jamie is a dance educator and choreographer for Academy of Arts at January’s and JADCO Contemporary Dance Company. She has choreographed many original ballets, including most recently “Chasing Butterflies,” written and directed by January Johnson Wolfe and composed by Mark Scarpelli.  Jamie is currently on the judging staff for Reaction Danceforce (RDF) Competitions and has judged for Premier Dance Competitions and Dance Masters of the Blue Grass.  She also has choreographed for various individuals, venues and show choirs in the Kanawha Valley area.  She has a great passion for children’s arts education.

Kim Bingaman KIM BINGAMAN has taught the pottery class at Summer Arts Camp for more than 10 years. As a lifelong artist and graduate of West Virginia University's College of Creative Arts, she can share the aspirations of budding artists. Kim wants all campers to experience the joy of working with clay. Students will learn basic clay techniques for making objects of their choice. Both pottery clay and polymer clay will be utilized during the 2 week course. Each person may explore the wonderful pliability as well as the limitations of the medium. Assorted tools and equipment are provided to allow the students to try many different techniques to construct their masterpieces.
(Photo not submitted.) BRIAN BARTH is an art educator currently working in Kanawha County. He graduated from Marshall University in 2004 with a Bachelors in Art Education pre-K to Adult and later in 2006 with a Master Degree in Educational Communications from West Virginia University. Brian also works teaching art classes at the Alban Arts and Conference Center and with student privately throughout Kanawha and Putnam Counties. Brian has taught a variety of subjects in art such as painting, sculpture, art history, drawing, ceramics, pottery, crafts and even math in the visual arts. Mr. Barth is always making, studying, or teaching art to keep himself connected with the subject.
ADAM BRYAN is the Director/Manager of the Alban Arts and Conference Center. He graduated from California University of Pennsylvania in 2005 with a Bachelors of Theatre. He has since then been working in the professional theatre world at a variety of places such as Tecumseh! and Theatre West Virginia. Adam has taught theatre classes in a variety of subjects, such as Acting, Improv, Readers Theatre, Stage Makeup and many more. Adam has taught at Theatre West Virginia's Professional Training Academy in Beckley, WV, as well as SAC in 2009. Adam currently is the head instructor at the Alban Arts Academy in St. Albans where he is constantly trying to enrich the lives of our youth through art.

Maggie Bryan MAGGIE BRYAN is originally from Philadelphia, PA and graduated from The University of the Arts in 2004 with a BFA in Dance Education. She was the Early Childhood Director of Movement/Dance Studies at the Settlement Music Schools Germantown Branch as well as a Modern Dance Teacher at the Philadelphia Creative and Performing Arts High School. In West Virginia she toured for five years with the West Virginia Dance Company and performed for Theatre West Virginia’s summer company as well as touring on their Puppet Company for a year. She currently is a Modern Dance Teacher at the Academy of Arts at January’s in Charleston, WV teaching classes of all disciplines, Modern, Ballet, Jazz and Tap. She also teaches a variety of classes at the Alban Arts Academy in St. Albans.
(Photo not submitted.) BETHANY CLINE holds a BFA degree in theatre from Marshall University and is employed at the West Virginia Division of Culture and History. After college, Bethany worked for Theatre West Virginia in Beckley, where she performed in the summer dramas Honey in the Rock and Hatfields & McCoys among others. She also traveled with Theatre WV's fall/spring touring company performing the role of Roxanne in Cyrano de Bergerac to numerous high schools and colleges around the state. Cline appeared in the made for television movie, Country Justice, with the late George C. Scott. Since settling down in Charleston, she has performed with most all of the local theatre companies including the Charleston Stage Company, Children’s Theatre of Charleston, Kanawha Players and the Charleston Light Opera Guild. Her directing credits include The Secret Garden, The Santaland Diaries, The Taffetas, The Butler Did It, The Vagina Monologues, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, The Dangerous Christmas of Red Riding Hood, Ramona Quimby and the Charleston Stage Company award-winning production of The Most Massive Woman Wins. Cline last appeared on stage as Martha in the Charleston Stage Company production, "Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" Her acting credits include leading roles in "Much Ado about Nothing," "Narnia," "Twelfth Night," "Witness for the Prosecution," "The Tempest," "Dancing at Lughnasa," "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof," "The Laramie Project," "Talking Pictures," and "The Rocky Horror Show."
(Photo not submitted.) CHRIS DILLON is a certified music teacher from Charleston, West Virginia. He received his Bachelors of Science in Education from West Virginia State University and is Orff Level I certified through the University of Kentucky. Chris has been teaching private saxophone, voice, and piano for ten years and teaching public school for three. He has performed as a saxophonist and singer in many capacities including various pit orchestras, collegiate and professional jazz and wind ensembles, as well as on the stage itself. Chris has had the opportunity to perform in several states as well as Vienna, Austria. He now resides in New York City and teaches public school in the Bronx, NY.
Dan Kehde DAN KEHDE is an award-winning playwright and local director of the Contemporary Youth Arts Company. Dan continues to create new and challenging works for the stage. With his focus on sharing the creative process with young artists, Dan finds some of his greatest rewards in finding fresh, new artists to bring his works to life. Since his first work premiered in Washington, DC in 1974, Dan has worked as a playwright, librettist, song-writer, novelist, acting coach and director, including a stint in New York with producer Robert Whitmore, in Orlando with Luthier Michael Tobias and, most recently, as a collaborator with local composer Mark Scarpelli. For the past 14 years, Dan has been managing director of the Contemporary Youth Arts Company in Charleston where he premieres many of his works. With nine plays published and performed nationally and internationally and over a dozen awards as a writer under his belt, Dan constantly marvels at the untapped potential in the living stage.
Lacy Hughes LACY HUGHES is a Charleston, WV native and was a CSC Summer Arts Camp participant for seven years and is thrilled to be teaching at the camp this year! She started her dance training at age eleven studying hip-hop, ballet, tap, jazz, modem, and belly dance. Lacy has taken dance intensive classes from Shane Sparks, Robin Dunn, Ryan Cyphert and many more. She participated in a hip-hop competition dance crew that competed in Star Systems National Talent Competition, Dance U.S.A., and DTI. Lacy currently teaches at The Academy of Arts at January's.
Mark Scarpelli MARK SCARPELLI was born in Torrington, Connecticut where he received his first musical influences through a boy’s church choir, teen “garage” bands and drum corps. After a year of college at University of Charleston/Morris Harvey College as a business major (plans were for Mark to take over the family restaurant) he had a revelation that music was to be his life. He discovered his true passion to be composition and was accepted at the Eastman School of Music where he studied music composition with Joseph Schwantner. A supportive wife and three musical children have been helpful through the years regarding his compositional efforts. When not teaching Middle School Gifted in the Putnam County Schools, Mark is focusing on writing music for the stage. Musical Theatre has been his comfortable niche where he has penned the music for four operas, nine musicals a book of vignettes, and five ballets. His works have been critically acclaimed and have been performed locally by the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra. His theatre pieces are performed by community theatre groups most notably, the Contemporary Youth Arts Company (CYAC) at the historical WVSU Capitol Center Theatre in Charleston West Virginia
Amy Trent AMY TRENT is an award-winning producer, director and animator.  With over 15 short films, two feature films, numerous documentaries and three animated films in her portfolio she is well rounded in the art of filmmaking.   She is currently in post-production of her latest film "Bear and the Color of Red”. Along with serving as producer for 5 films in production and she just finished her third documentary, “The Lives of Dancers.”   In addition, she also serves as Media Specialist for WV State University and teaches television and film production classes including a bi-weekly television show for PBS called Campus Connection and a  new weekly television show for Suddenlink, called “Coach’s Corner.”  She serves as Executive Producer on both.
Kelly Underwood KELLY UNDERWOOD is a native of Poca, WV. She has been dancing since the age of three, training with different studios in the area including January's Academy. At Poca High School, she continued her love of performing by being a part of the show choir, the marching band's color guard, and the dance team. Kelly has also performed with the Charleston Light Opera Guild in "Babes in Arms" and "Seussical the Musical." Kelly graduated from West Virginia Wesleyan College in 2008 with a B.S. in business administration with dance and musical theatre minors. In college, she was part of the Theatre Department where she performed in "A Chorus Line" and "Chicago." She was also a part of the dance company and dance team, which she held the captain position her senior year.

Kelly is currently employed full-time by the Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety and part-time by the Division of Culture and History in the events staff helping plan festivals during the year, including the West Virginia State Dance Festival. She has received her 200 hour-registered yoga teacher training with Yoga Alliance and is teaching classes at January's studio. She is happy to be a part of the faculty of the Charleston Stage Company's 2012-2013 Summer Arts Camp.  
Brooke Valot BROOKE VALOT is currently a dance instructor and choreographer for Pointe Academy Dance Center in Rochester, MI. She graduated in 2004 with her Bachelor of Arts in Dance and a minor in Psychology from Western Michigan University. As a performer, she was in the debut of a modern piece by Morella Petrozzi, co-owner of Danza Viva in Peru. And in 2003 she danced for the IABD Conference in Washington D.C. Brooke has also received scholarships in jazz and tap from conventions such as Company Dance with Paula Abdul. And in 2007 she earned a choreography award from Fire and Ice Talent Competition. Along with her dance experience, Brooke received her ACE Certification in Personal Training. This will be her fifth summer working for Charleston Stage Company in the dance department.
Chris Wood CHRIS WOOD has an M.F.A. in directing from the California Institute of the Arts and has master’s degrees from Marshall University and the Florida State University. He teaches speech and drama at Southern West Virginia Community & Technical College.
