Charleston Stage Company, through its quality productions, uncompromising standards, and commitment to diversity, education, and excellence, has personified the essence of a quality community arts organization.  Its basic mission is to perform high quality and innovative theatre productions for West Virginia audiences.  The founding goals of the organization are:

1.  To perform experimental and avant-garde plays, new dramatic works, and American and European classic dramas;

2.  To bring theatre to the community through educational and artistic outreach programs;

3.  To sponsor and/or facilitate new and exciting touring companies in West Virginia; and

4.  To become a truly multi-cultural theatre company through an aggressive policy of open casting and involvement of minority artists.

Now in its seventeenth season, Charleston Stage Company has continued to grow and evolve into a significant cultural presence in Charleston and the Kanawha Valley. The plays CSC produce and activities it sponsors continue to attract larger and more diverse audiences and participants.  These performances and arts activities have served thousands of patrons, including children of all ages, senior citizens, minority groups, and economically disadvantaged audiences

Charleston Stage Company prides itself on its total involvement with the community it serves.  It is the only theatre group in the Charleston area which regularly performs African-American plays utilizing Black actors and attracting multi-racial audiences.  And it is the only theatre group in the Charleston area which is actively involved in arts education through its comprehensive summer arts camp for children ranging in age from 3 to 17.

Charleston Stage Company, because of its commitment to excellence in all areas of production and arts education activities, is one of the artistic “jewels” of the Kanawha Valley and the state of West Virginia and is now considered to be one of the finest community theatres in the nation.

Statement of Diversity and Inclusion

(Approved by CSC's Board of Directors in June, 2002)

 "Charleston Stage Company is committed to the goals of diversity, inclusion and the principles of equal opportunity for all who participate in the art of theatre.  To these ends, we encourage production opportunities in all theatrical disciplines and areas of theatrical production to include persons of every race, color, culture, age, gender, physical challenge and sexual orientation, thereby contributing to a theatre (both on and off stage) that reflects the full diversity of our community and American society.

While we recognize that there can be no interference with the artistic integrity or contractual rights of the playwright, director and other theatre artists, we challenge participating artists in our own theatre community to confront traditional stereotypes.  We acknowledge that the growth and vitality of theatre is dependent upon the inclusion of diverse voices and impulses in all theatrical disciplines."
